Do I attend professional conferences throughout the residency?
Yes, Pharmacy practice residents will attend the ASHP Midyear meeting and the Great Lakes Residency Conference. Residents will also be highly encouraged to attend the Ohio College of Clinical Pharmacists meeting and other local pharmacy organizations that they have an interest in.
Does Hillcrest Hospital support travel to conferences?
Hillcrest Hospital will reimburse Pharmacy Practice Residents for travel to and from the ASHP midyear meeting and to the Great Lakes Residency Conference.
How are residents evaluated?
Residents are evaluated utilizing the Resitrak system. Snap shot evaluations are completed after two week into a rotation. Summative evaluations are completed within three days of completing a rotation. Residents will also be evaluated quarterly by the Program Director, and by preceptors who are working with residents in longitudinal experiences such as research and Ambulatory Medicine.
What projects or presentations are required in addition to daily clinical activities?
Residents will be responsible for one research project throughout the year as well as one MUE. Residents will also write two drug information questions each month and complete a journal club evaluation, a formal presentation, two case presentations and an in-service each month. The residents will also work on "Drug of the Day" with the Director of Pharmacy or the preceptor for the month.
What other educational opportunities are available?
Pharmacy practice residents will have the opportunity to precept students from various pharmacy schools throughout the Cleveland area. Residents are required to attend two leadership classes annually.
What teaching opportunities are available at Hillcrest Hospital?
Several educational opportunities are available to Pharmacy Practice Residents including attendance at Medical Grand Rounds specific to the rotation the resident is currently on, as well as sessions on various rotations where physicians teach the house staff during or following rounds. Finally, Cleveland Clinic and Hillcrest Hospital offer an extensive selection of classes for staff with a lecture series to improve almost any weakness (teaching, communication, presentation, computer skills, etc.)
Will I need an Ohio pharmacy license?
Yes, you are required to be licensed by the time you begin your residency.
Is the residency accredited?
Yes, the Residency is an ASHP accredited Residency since 2007.
How many residents will be selected?
We select two residents each year.
Does this program participate in the match?
Yes, we participate in the match.
When is the application deadline?
ALL application materials are due on or before January 20. This includes letters of recommendation. ALL applicants are urged to allow enough time for persons writing letters of recommendation and to inquire about the timeliness in which letters are sent. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
Is an interview required?
Yes, an on-site interview is required.
When will interviews take place?
Interviews will take place during the last week of January, through the last week of February.
When does the residency begin and end?
The Residency will begin on July 1 of each year. Residents must go through orientation and thus, residents may be required to attend an orientation the Monday before July 1, if July 1 is not on a Monday.
What is the stipend?
The stipend is $38,000
How much vacation time is available?
Residents are provided 28 days of paid time off during the resident year. However, only two weeks of vacation is allotted during the year and must be approved by the residency program director. Residents are encouraged to utilize days in late January and February to interview for future positions.
Will the residency program be showcased at the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting?
Yes, the Residency is showcased at the ASHP midyear. The Hillcrest Residency Program will be showcased with all Cleveland Clinic Residency Programs.
How will this residency prepare me for board certification?
In addition to the critical thinking skills you develop during patient care, the required rotations of Hillcrest Hospital's PGY1 Pharmacy practice residency offer an excellent preparation for the Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist (BCPS) exam. Hillcrest also offers a number of CE’s throughout the year in a wide variety of topics (generally about 1 per week) which help reinforce the more general range of knowledge / experience acquired in your PGY1 year.
What is EPIC?
EPIC is a computer-based physician order entry program that Hillcrest Hospital utilizes. The program integrates data from pharmacy, admissions, laboratory,radiology, nursing, medicine and microbiology. EPIC is used to performing daily pharmaceutical care duties including: Providing patient demographic data, laboratory data, microbiology data, medications, parenteral nutrition information and drug levels. Additionally, patient daily progress notes, nursing care notes and all data pertinent to patient care is available on this computer system. Epic is utilized to document pharmacist-performed clinical activities, interventions and monitoring notes.
Is there anything else I should know?
The library has a colossal collection of online journals that you can easily access from anywhere in the hospital. If Hillcrest does not have a particular journal, articles can be obtained from Cleveland Clinic main campus in a timely manner.
Hillcrest Hospital has electronic medical records which are extremely useful for clinical activities as well as any data collection / research that may be done throughout the year.
Hillcrest Hospital utilizes computerized physician order entry. This allows pharmacists to perform more clinical functions.
On-site parking is available for pharmacy residents across the street from the main hospital. A shuttle service runs frequently to allow for efficient use of time.
